In 2020, it is projected that 811 million people in the world faced food insecurity. Roughly 43 million Americans deal with food insecurity however, it remains to be a global issue. It can be influenced by availability, access, stability, culture, environment, and economic factors.
The Taproot Community Library was inspired by celebrating the diverse culture and arts of the Northgate district of Oakland, California while enhancing nature within the urban landscape. The contemporary design will reflect the growth surrounding the community, looking towards a more sustainable future by implementing environmentally conscious materials. Taproot is a redefined library center that provides economic and environmental development by providing an inclusive social hub that will build cultural resilience in facilitation equitable access to knowledge, information, and resources. Social inclusion will be developed through various services and learning methods that can provide a respect for nature and cultural diversity while promoting civic engagement. Taproot anticipates to create a welcoming and barrier free gathering space to share common interests and knowledge. The library will provide hands on education and encourage methods of sustainable food sourcing and nutritious gardening and cooking skills for the entire community.
