PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

Today, wellness encompasses more than just fitness and nutrition, but the overall physical and mental health of individuals has become the focus. Our mental health impacts our day to day lives, affecting our mood, emotions, behaviors, and thoughts. Some of the key components that can affect our mental health are diet and exercise. A healthy lifestyle is proven to benefit our mental stability as well as to promote our physical wellbeing.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

PEOPLE.png

The CDC estimates that 1 in 5 adults experience at least one mental health condition per year.

According to the world health organization, Mental health conditions can have an affect on all areas of our life including work performance, relationships with friends and family, and the ability to participate within the community. Two of the most common mental health conditions include depression and anxiety, with most people experiencing some level of grief during some period of their life. A report by statistics Canada at the beginning of the COVID

-19 pandemic, showed that there was an increase in the reported rate of both major depressive disorder, increasing from 15% to 19%, and generalized anxiety increasing from 13% to 15% of the canadian population. Despite the relevant prominence of these facts, the global median of government health spending that goes to mental health is less than 2 %.

LOCATION

Thrive is a community village located in the new neighbourhood of the Lantzville Foothills. The District of Lantzville is located along the eastern coastal plain of Vancouver Island, between the regional district of Nanaimo (west and south) and the city of Nanaimo (east) covering approximately 28 square kilometers. Lantzville is located 20 minutes from both downtown Nanaimo and downtown Parksville, making it a great destination for either town residents to stop in. Thrive focuses on serving the Lantzville Foothills community with everyday services and amenities which will benefit the communities health and future development.

CONCEPT

The mountainous landscape was the key inspiration for the design. Mountains contain curvature, harsh peaking angles, layered shadow and light with the main illuminance hitting the top of the peaks, snowy curves that rest on top of mountains, and textural variation. The key design feature within the facility is the intent of implementing biophilic design elements, which will be articulated through the use of visual connections within the site, providing views to the natural landscape, and designing with biomorphic shapes and textures which mimic the natural environment. Rugged textures and soft finishes will balance each other to create a natural essence that feels rustic and raw.

MOOD.png

Biophilic design is proven to be linked to affecting people's health and wellbeing. Experiences of the natural environment provide for emotional restoration and lower tension, anxiety, anger, fatigue, and total mood disturbance than urban environments with limited characteristics of nature.

THRIFT SHOP

It is estimated that 92 million tons of textile waste is created annually by the fashion industry. Consignment clothing provides options that are unique, affordable, and helps to save the environment by selling previously warn clothing and accessories and will allow community members to give and exchange items from their wardrobes for a second life.
